What is unprepared steel scrap? ›

The most common reason scrap is unprepared is being oversized. If it's longer than 36" OR wider than 18" then it's unprepared. The second most common reason to be unprepared is that it has some other metal attached to it, like copper or lead.

Bare bright copper is uncoated, unalloyed, bare wire or cable, no more than 16 gauge in thickness. It is quickly classified as a #1 copper quality scrap if it lacks paint or impurities without copper piping.

The time of year may influence supply and demand, as well. For example, during warmer months, the construction industry tends to pick up and require more material, so pricing can increase. As other metal-hungry industries go through their own seasonal highs and lows, so does scrap metal pricing.

Copper. As you probably guessed, copper is the most valuable metal to scrap. Even with a fluctuating market, copper is always a good metal to sell. It is so valuable because it has an infinite recycling life, meaning it can be used again and again without losing its quality.

There are approximately 32 empty soda cans (assuming a 12 oz size) in a pound. However, this number can vary slightly depending on the specific dimensions and weight of the cans.

Another related term of measurement is the gross ton or GT. Now this unit is also known in the steel industry as a “long” ton or an “imperial” ton. This term of measurement is used to measure steel scrap in the US and is equal to 2,240 pounds. Compared to a standard “short” ton, a gross ton is 12 percent larger.

Heavy Iron

The difference between the two is HMS 1 contains no galvanized and blackened steel, whereas HMS 2 does.

Heavy melting steel (HMS) or heavy melting scrap is a designation for recyclable steel and wrought iron. It is broken up into two major categories: HMS 1 and HMS 2, where HMS 1 does not contain galvanized and blackened steel, whereas HMS 2 does.

Unlike #1 copper, #2 copper's appearance is dirty and consists of miscellaneous unalloyed wire, pipe or solid metal that continues to have solder, paint or any kind of coating on it.
